I am pleased to say I have finished one waay overdue project. I made these for my sister for a xmas present!! Yes a very late one, or indeed my sister said maybe a very early one! Which is a great way of looking at it. I did give her two small handmade gifts and a fun, silly store bought one on the day which kinda makes up for my tardiness, doesn't it?

I love making these and the fabric combos are endless. It's the kind of gift you could make someone every couple of years because, lets face it oven mitts don't really stay nice for long. I throw mine in the machine for a wash but they do get to a point where they are pretty horrible.

The insulation is this stuff I bought at Spotlight. It is pretty expensive and I have enough left for a few more pairs but if anyone has any alternative they use I would love to hear what it is.
Onto the next overdue project now...

It's never too late. I gave some presents last week!!!
That's what the green polka dots were for!! I love the quilting lines!! Fabulous idea!!!
Isn't it cool???!!!
Lovely mitts! I had oven mitts that were made of several layers of 100% cotton terry cloth. They were a little bulkier that standard but definitely protected you from the heat. They were made by the Pampered Chef a home party based kitchen store. My Mum has made me some with the pretty fabric like a slipcover to be washed seperately from the insulated part so theoretically you could have several sets of slip-covers. Glad you are in the sewing room!
Those mitts rock!!
Love those fabrics Linda, I use the thermal fleece too. I just figure I'd rather NOT burn my fingers if it can be helped, so the extra it costs is worth it.

They look great and I had no idea you could buy that stuff! Thanks for the tip. I recently cut up an old dacron style "doona"/quilt to make new padding for my ironing board...you've given me an idea for how I can use up the rest of it!
Who cares if they're late, they are fabulous! X
Black and white mitts are very stylish! I have used Insul Brite in my oven mitts. My Mum used to use old towels for the wadding.
Love the funky quilting & fabric combo.
I usually grab the nearest tea towel, which really doesn't have the geratest thermal properties!
Don't feel bad. I just mailed my nephew his Christmas present. He's two, so he didn't miss it. Hubby made a wooden crane that I had to make a huge box for. $45 to ship stateside! Gee, I wonder why I put it off.
I make hotpads, and the heatproof batting is worth the money. Your mitts are very stylish!
They are great mitts! (I use InsulBright with some batting for heatproofing).
